Experimentally, it is observed that when you heat lead nitrate crystals in a dry test tube then, it decomposes to form lead oxide and Nitrogen dioxide gas and oxygen.

The brown fumes are due to the formation of brown gas nitrogen dioxide (no2) . the chemical name of white salt is lead nitrate pb (no³)2 the salt on heating produces brown fumes . ... this salt can be nitrate but if the residue left after heating is yellow in colour it definitely implies that the salt is lead nitrate
