Can We Dictate What People Should Eat and Drink?

What one eats is a matter of his/her preference and forcing our choices onto them is neither desirable nor acceptable. So, in simple words we can say that we can't dictate what people should eat and drink as far as matter of choice is concerned. At the same time it is maintained that our choice is based on reason and general welfare. If one chooses to eat fatty foods and drink beer all the times, his food habits are to be dictated for his own benefit. If he is made to understand the benefits of balanced food and convinced about healthy diet, he can escape numerous diseases that may attack him due to indulgence.

In a similar manner, if sale of tobacco and liquor is prohibited upto a certain age, it is for the reason that at a younger age students may not be able to exercise their will and right code of conduct if not kept under restrictions. Hence, we can always suggest what people should eat and not dictate what they should and should not.

Man’s a being of free will; he cannot endure restrictions of any sort. His physical needs are dearest to him. The world History is a witness to the fact whenever his needs were meddled with, revolts and revolutions followed. Food scarcity and interference with the basic freedom of people were the root causes of the French revolution and the Russian Revolution. When such big revolutions could shake the foundations of nations in the past, you can imagine the magnitude of consequences if common man’s basic needs were to be interfered with in the contemporary times!

In the current times dictating people about what to do and what not to do is ridiculous and absurd. The people these days are very aware and enlightened. They know the pros and cons of everything. They are highly health conscious. There might be a few exceptions; but predominantly, they are quite knowledgeable. Even if in some of the cases they are not aware, we can’t dictate them. They are living in a democratic era where they have the right to eat and drink whatever they want. Dictating them would be depriving them of their freedom.

Undoubtedly, the menaces of fast food and alcoholism are increasing among the people; even in this regard people can’t be dictated. They can be enlightened or made aware of the adverse effects of fast food and alcohol, but they can’t be dictated to abstain themselves from eating and drinking if they wished to consume them. Dictating them will lead to conflicts.

So, the Government, Organizations, and people who wish to work in minimizing the consumption of fast-food, alcohol, etc, should use democratic ways such as campaigns, awareness drives rather than coercion or dictating.
