Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born in a poor Brahmin family on 26 September 1820 in a village called Birsingha in the district of Midnapore. He came to Kolkata on foot with his father in 1829 and got admission in Sanskrit college. He made a thorough study of poetry, grammar, etc. He passed an examination on Hindu law in 1839 and the title Vidyasagar was awarded to him. He became an assistant secretary of Sanskrit college in 1846 but resigned in 1847 as his proposals for reforms of some of the system of the college were rejected. He adorned the chair of the Principal of Sanskrit College in 1851. "Shakuntala", "Betal Pancha Bingshati", 'Bodhodaya' are his creative works. He proposed for widow remarriage in 1854 which was made to an act in 1856. He was a very kind hearted man and helped the poor indiscriminately. This eminent personality left for his heavenly abode at the age of 71 on 29th July in 1891.
