Ruskin Bond is a British Indian author, who gave an important role in making the Indian literature better. He currently lives in Landour, Mussorie, India, with his adopted family. He has published numerous novels and stories. Ruskin has also recognized by the Indian Council for Children’s Education, for his contributions to the growth of Indian literature.

In 1992, he was awarded the Sahitya Academy award for his novel, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. Even, Ruskin has been honored with Padma Shri (1999), India’s fourth-highest civilian award. In 2014, he was honored with Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

Early Life of Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond was born on 19 May 1934, in Kasauli, Punjab State Agency, British India. His father, Audrey Bond, was an English teacher and taught English to the Princess of Jamnagar Palace. His mother, Edith Clarke, was a housewife. Ruskin along with his sister, Ellen Bond, lived there till he was 6 years old. Shortly, his father joined Royal Air Force (RIF) in 1939, and Ruskin with his mother and sister needed to live at his maternal home at Dehradun. Ruskin had a sister, Ellen, who lived in Ludhiana until his death in 2014. He has also a brother, William Bond lived in Canada.

Later Ruskin was sent to a boarding school in Mussoorie. When he became 8 years old, his mother, Edith, separated from his father and married a Punjabi Hindu, name Hari. Ruskin’s father brought him to New Delhi, where he was posted. Ruskin has explained these days with his father as one of the best happiest moments of his life.

While he was 10 years old, his father died of Malaria in Calcutta. During this tragedy, Ruskin was at his boarding school in Shimla and was informed about this incident by his teacher. He was totally broken out. Later, he was taken by his mother and stepfather who was in Dehradun.

Education of Ruskin Bond

Ruskin started his elementary schooling from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He graduated from that school in 1950. His writing skills were very strong, from his school times. Even so, he won various writing awards and prizes in his school. The two main awards he won in his school were the Irwin Divinity Prize and Hailey Literature Prize. In 1951 at the age of 16, Ruskin wrote his first-ever small story, Untouchable.

Begin of Ruskin Career

In late 1951, Ruskin went to his aunts’ home in the Channel Island (UK), where he stayed for two years. He thinks to go there so that he can get a better prospect. There he started writing his first novel, The room on the roof. It was an autobiographical story of an orphaned Anglo-Indian boy, Rusty. It earned him the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (1957). Ruskin then went to London and worked in a photo studio, yet he searched for a publisher. After getting it published, he used his money to come back to Bombay, India and settled in Dehradun.

Ruskin worked as a freelancer for a few years from Delhi and Dehradun. He then wrote various poems and short stories for newspapers and magazines. It helped him in sustaining financially. Ruskin said in his youth, sometimes I got lucky and some work got selected and I earned a few hundred rupees. Since I was in my 20s, I didn’t have any responsibilities and I was happy to be doing what I loved doing best. Later, he decided to live in Mussoorie in 1963, because it was near to the editors and publishers in Delhi.

Rise of Ruskin Career and his Popularity

In 1980, Penguin (Indian company which publishes books, stories, etc) established in India and approached Ruskin to write some books. He had written two novels, The Room on the Roof and its sequel, Vagrants in the Valley in 1956. Both novels were published by the Penguin India in 1993. Even so, he also wrote another non-fictional novel in the same year, The Best of Ruskin Bond, published by Penguin India.

Ruskin has a lot of interest in supernatural fictional writings. It led him to write popular titles, as Ghost Stories from the Raj, A season of Ghost, and A Face in the Dark. Till that time, he was written more than 500 short stories, essays, and novels. Ruskin Bond has also published his auto biography, Scenes from a Writer’s Life. The auto biography describes Ruskin Bond formative years of how he grew up in Anglo-Indian. He further published another auto biography, Lone Fox Dancing (2017).

Since Ruskin became 30 years old, he worked as a freelance writer in Mussoorie. Once someone asked him what he likes the most. He replied that I have been able to write for so long. I started writing from the age of 17 and I’m still doing it. If I wasn’t a professional writer, I would still write. Ruskin has written in his essay, “On being an Indian, I explain my Indian identity, Race didn’t make me one. Religion didn’t make me one. But history can make. And in the long race, its history that counts.”
