write a book review on " The world as I see it" by Albert Einstein
Answers
Explanation:
All I knew about Albert Einstein was theory of relativity, his weirdness depicted in his old photographs, his dishevelled hair, stories of him being married to a girl who was asked to keep the food plate in his room twice a day and shut the door and his association with Mahatma Gandhi.Whenever I visited Delhi’s Nehru Platenarium, I could not keep off my eyes from a saying posted on one of its walls which was said by Albert Einstein about Mahatma Gandhi which was ’Who will believe after 100 years that a man named Gandhi walked on this earth in flesh and blood who led India to Independence?"Some how I was always mesmerised by this saying written in Hindi and thought of times when these people were living and how was the life then? By reading this book , THE WORLD AS I SEE IT, I have realised I knew very less about Einstein and his persona..
This book is a compilation of letters and speeches of Albert Einstein on different subjects.I never knew he spoke and was interested in almost all the subjects of society apart from Physics and science which I thought was the only subject he was interested in.He also doesn’t look like a scientist always sitting in a room or laboratory and brooding on a particular subject, but he comes out as a versatile person having very progressive views and miles ahead of his times.
This book also reflects the world scenario at his time and doesn’t look very different from today’s time like all the countries fighting, differences of races and cultures, oppression of some communities etc.
He was a Jew, by birth a swiss and took up German citizenship , a fact I never knew ..and all his life he thought of all individuals as same residing anywhere in world and many a times he was shrouded in controversies.
A line which I liked very much in this book was "The man who regards his own life and that of his fellow creatures as meaningless is not merely unfortunate, but disqualified for life, we are all here for a brief sojourn and living for each other..."
He has spoken about democracy, justice, liberty, politics, religion, art , peace, universalness of science and disarmament in his letters and addresses and had great views and stands.I wonder even then in 1920’s and 30’s talks about disarmament were going on and till now nothing has been done about it and countries are going on making nuclear bombs. He also looks particularly concerned about decadence of art.
To a letter addressed to schoolchildren of Japan, he talks lovingly and tells them how he has put a colorful drawing book of them on his table, he doesn’t come out as a dry man as depicted somewhere else.I think he was a very misunderstood man and false notions about him were spread, I don’t know why..may be he had some political convictions and had some opponents.
It was also interesting to read that one of American Women’s league actually protested his visit to America and even he had no idea why he faced such protest! He also talks about sending women to war front so that people come to know how it is when attacking a defenceless civilian, I did not quite understand what he meant by that, may be he was anti-war and it was a kind of taunt on warring nations.
He was great friends with equally great George Bernard Shaw and Sigmund Freud and some letters are written to them.
He talks about situation in Europe at length and looks concerned..and at times calls upon America to intervene..In some of his letters, he threatens to give away his citizenship, it looks like he was a very great figure apart from a great physicist at that time..He also talks about plight of Jews and their ancient culture.
In nutshell, a different aspect of his personality emerges from this book and some unknown facts about him and his life are uncovered, At least I didn’t knew many things about him ...I think he was a great man especially as a human being..
