Variation in shape & size of a cell is due to its function , which it perform & how it responds to it's inner & outer environment . Cell size is determine by it's surface area to volume ratio . Smaller cells do it's all functions more vigorously then larger one , each cell is evolved according to it's function , like , Neuron cell have long & thin extension ( axon & dendrites ) which help them to pass electrical impulses & chemical message to other neuron , to coordinate all body parts in well manner . Also cells change their shape to improve their locomotion , like ... RBC & WBC . Each cell type has it's unique shape due to it's cytoskeleton , an internal scaffold built of protein filament . That's why their is variation in shape & size of cell .
