Summary:

In the short poem, 'Fire and Ice', Robert Frost is speculating about the end of the world. He uses the metaphor of, 'Fire and Ice' to do so. He likens 'Fire' with desire, greed and lust, where as 'Ice' signifies hatred. Both refer to the two dark traits of human nature, which are capable of destroying the world.

Through these lines, the poet opines on how the world will come to an end. There are two views regarding this. Robert Frost gives a symbolic term to these views when he says that ice stands for coldness of attitude and hatred whereas fire stands for the burning emotions of greed and desire. he says that lust or desire for power and control is alone capable of destroying the whole world. As the poem  progresses, Frost opines that the world was to end more than once then 'Ice' or hatred was sufficient to bring about the destruction. He says that with conviction because he has the experience of hatred too.

The thread of distinction between 'Fire' and 'Ice' is very thin, both are negative emotions  if they are the uncontrolled, unbridled sufficient passions of desire, greed jealousy, hatred, coldness and indifference towards each other will result in the destruction of the world.
