carbohydrates are energy-giving organic compounds. They are formed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio 1 : 2 : 1. In each molecule of carbohydrates, hydrogen and oxygen occur in the same ratio as in water (2:1). For this reason, these compounds are also called hydrates of carbon.

carbohydrates are the main source of energy.One gram of it on oxidation, releases about 17 kilojoules or 4.1 kilocalories of energy.

carbohydrates are stored in the body as glycogen in animals and as strach in plants. Cellulose is a polymer of glucose, which forms the cell wall of the plant cells.

carbohydrates include sugar, strach and cellulose.

average daily need of carbohydrates for an adult doing moderate work is 500gm. labourers doing physical work and athletes need more carbohydrates. Though carbohydrates form a major part (more than half) of our food but form just 1.0% of the total body weight. this shows that carbohydrates are mainly used s fuel.
