Filled with the feeling of hurt and anger, they took to aggressive means to drive the British officials out of the country. However, Mahatma Gandhi chose a completely different way thereby astonishing the others.
Peace and Non-Violence

CHITTRANJAN DAS
Chittaranjan Das was a great nationalist leader and political guru of Subhas Chandra Bose. He joined hands with Motilal and Lala Lajpat Rai to form the Swarajya Party in 1926. Chitta Ranjan Das has been the poet pleader, politician, and prophet of India. He has been the harbinger of restless, radical and revolutionary India recently represented by Subhas Chandra Bose and his Forward Block.
He was born on November 5, 1870. After Matriculating from the Calcutta University he went to England for higher studies. There he did some brisk political propaganda for Dadabhoy Naoroji who was standing for the British Parliament and did get elected. Mohammad Ali Jinnah also took part in this electioneering campaign.
Das showed a great moral courage in putting himself to unnecessary trouble in order to pay off a very heavy loan for which his father had stood security on behalf of a friend. The friend failed, but the son paid off the loan for his Father, even though the loan was time-barred.
Das first showed his brilliance as a lawyer in the terrorist case of Aurobindo Ghose. His brilliant advocacy at once brought him into lime light. Again he shone dazzlingly in the Manicktolla Bomb Case in which thirty-six Bengalis were involved. He carried out the defense without remuneration,
His practice otherwise was the most lucrative. His earnings sometimes verged on fifty thousand pounds a year. Das, like Bose, had had his difference with Gandhiji, and was father of the Swarajist Party. Pandit Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawaharlal, was his co-worker. Bose and Das formed an excellent team of work.
