Mr. Iron, a good Latin scholar, was a neighbor of
Mr. William Wade whom Helen and Miss Sullivan had been visiting in Hutton,
Pennsylvania. He was as a man of rare, sweet nature and of wide experience. He proved to be very helpful to Helen as he
taught her Latin grammar principally. He often helped her in arithmetic, which
she found as troublesome as it was uninteresting. He also read Tennyson’s ‘In
Memoriam.’ Mr. Irons taught Helen how to know an author and recognize his style.
