In the US, a county is an political or administrative subdivision of a state comprising a geographical region with specific limits and usually with certain level of govt. authority.

Explanation:

  • Counties were among the earliest local government units in the 13 colonies to become the US. In order to relieve the administrative pressure in Jamestown, Virginia established the first county. The Burgesses House split the colony in 1617 first in 4 'incorporations' (or districts) and then in 1634 in eight shires or counties.
  • Over a decade later, in the year 1634, the royal crown created 8 shires (or counties), which comprises  the original “cities” plus additional land. The eight shires comprised Charles City Shire, Accomack Shire, Elizabeth City Shire, Charles River Shire, James City Shire, Henrico Shire, Warrosquyoake Shire, and Warwick River Shire.
  • When independence came, "the constitutional framers did not include the local govts. Instead, they entrusted the matter to States. Early constitutional states typically conceptualised county government as an arm of the state."
  • In the 20th century local government's position was enhanced, and counties began to provide more facilities, to acquire domestic rule and county commission, such that local legislation in their unincorporated areas were enacted.
  • For certain states, these rights are partly or mostly passed to the counties smaller divisions referred to as townships, however in New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and New York,  they were called towns. Based in the state constitution, the county can or cannot overrule its townships on certain issues.
  • The city and county of Broomfield, Colorado, was formed in 2001 as a combined city county, formerly part of four counties and is the newest in the United States. The Alaskan districts of Skagway, created in 2007, Wrangell formed in 2008 and Petersburg, formed in 2013, are the newest county equivalents.
  • Most counties are subdivided into muncipalities, unicorporated areas and townships. Others don't have any extra divisions, or may operate like a combined city county. There are several towns and villages in some counties and New York City is split into five counties called as govt. level boroughs
