Pituitary is one of the most important gland which is attached to the bottom of the hypothalamus. It is also termed as the master gland which secrets several hormones including the growth hormone. The pituitary gland is very small in size, it's all about like a pea in size. The average mass of pituitary gland is one-half or 0.5 gram.
It is termed as the master gland because it controls all other endocrine glands.
Pituitary glands can be classified into two parts or it has two distinct lobes namely, the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary. The front part of the posterior pituitary is termed as intermediate lobe which is different from the rest of the lobes and is almost absent in human beings. But the intermediate lobe is more functional than that of the lower animals.
