Answer :
In the chapter 'My Childhood,' when Abdul Kalam was in the fifth standard at the Rameswaram Elementary School, he always sat in the front row of the classroom next to Ramanadha Sastry. He used to wear a cap which identified him as a Muslim while Ramanadha Sastry wore the sacred thread which gave away his identity as a Hindu Priest's (Brahmin's) son.
One day a new teacher came to the class and could not tolerate a Muslim and Hindu boy sitting together. He asked Abdul Kalam to move to the back bench in accordance with his social ranking. Both the boys felt very sad and Ramanadha Sastry wept when he shifted to the last row.
Both boys told their respective parents about the incident. This infuriated Lakshmana Sastry, who summoned the teacher and rebuked him for spreading the poison of social inequality and communal intolerance in the minds of innocent young children. The teacher finally apologized to the school and also reformed his behavior.
This incident left a deep impression on Abdul Kalam. He did not feel any different from his Hindu friends due to his different religious beliefs and upbringing. However, this incident shook his faith in the goodness and deep kindness of people. It made him aware of the differences between them.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was in his 5th standard when a new teacher was appointed for his class.
Explanation:
- The new teacher saw Dr. Abdul Kalam was sitting in the first row with his close friend Ramanadha Sastry.
- The teacher disliked a Muslim boy was sitting with a Hindu boy who was the son of a Hindu priest.
- Dr. Kalam was wearing a Muslim cap on his head and this is how the teacher identified him as a Muslim. The teacher immediately asked Dr. Kalam to sit in the back bench and both friends felt sad about this. They both narrated this incident to their parents. The teacher was rebuked by Ramanadha Sastry’s father upon which the teacher realised his mistake of spreading social inequality and communal intolerance in children’s innocent minds.
- Teachers are the backbone of the nation and if they induce wrong concepts in the young minds, the social injustice will never be eradicated. Hence it was right that Ramanadha Sastry’s father rebuked the teacher.
