ASSAM LITERARY SOCIETY
In Calcutta we find more strong initiatives taken by the students from Assam to form associations in order to improve Assamese language and literature. As a result, in Calacutta the Assamese Literary Society was established in 1872 under the leadership of Devicharan Baruah and Gangagovinda Phukan. Though the proclaimed objective of the society was literary, yet it also played a political role.
In 1872, two of its illustrious members Jagannath Baruah and Manik Chandra Baruah, on behalf of the society submitted a memorandum to the viceroy, Lord Northbook appealing to take necessary steps for the development of the natural resources of Assam and linking Assam with Bengal by railway. The society was active till 1885.
