Degree of Comparison/ Comparison of Adjectives.

Definition:

A word which qualifies a noun is called an adjective. When an adjective is compared to one noun or two nouns or more than two nouns is said to be called as degree of comparison/comparison of adjectives.

They are of three types:

  1. positive(one noun)
  2. comparative (two nouns)
  3. superlative (more than two nouns)

NOTE:

1) In comparative degree sometimes we use instead of then and to is used for latin comparatives. Such as:- junior, senior, inferior ,superior, interior, exterior, posterior, prefer, prerior, referable for these words we have to use "to."

2) For single syllabe we use 'er' form for comparitive and 'est' form for superlative. But for more than one syllabe words we need to use more for comparitive and most for superlative.

3) The is used compulsory in superlative.

Rules for Degree of Comparison.....

1) Equal rule:

example:

example:

The Indian ocean is deeper than many/most other oceans in the world.

superlative:

The Indian ocean is one of the deepest ocean in the world.

4)The highest or best rule:

Positive:

structure;

no+other+is+as+adj+as

example:

No other language is as tough as Chinese language.

Comparitive:

structure;

adj+than/to+any other.

Example:

Chinese language is tougher than any other language in the world.

Superlative:

Chinese is the toughest language in the world.

5) Negative form of rule 4:

positive:

structure;

some other+are+at least+as+adj+as

example:

Someother girls of 9thB are at least as unique as them.

comparitive:

structure;

is/are+not+adj+than/to+someother.

example:

They are not more unique than some other girls of 9th B.

Superlative:

They are not the most unique girl of class 9th B.

positive:

not so+adj+as+some other.

Example:

English sir is not so junior as some other sirs in our school

Comparitive:

structure:

someother+is/are+adj+than/to.

example:

Someother sirs in our school are more junior to English sir.

Superlative:

English sir is not one of the most junior sirs in our school.
