The mesomeric effect takes place in conjugated system via their pi-orbitals.Mesomeric effect may be defined as the permanent effect in which pi electrons are transfered from a multiple bond to an atom,or from multiple bond to single covalent bond or from an atom with lone pair of electrons to the adjacent single covalent bond.

In short effect caused by the phenomenon of resonance or mesomerism in a molecule is called resonance effect or mesomeric effect.

The mesomeric effect is transmitted through whole of the conjugated system and thus effect may also be called as conjugative effect.

Mesomeric effect is of two types, +M and -M .It is said to be +M if electron pair is trasffered away from the atom. When electron pair is transffered towards the atom ,it is said to be -M
