Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union from the mid 1920s till 1953. He was the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the dictator of the state.

Under his rule, the concept of "Socialism in One Country" became a central tenet of Soviet society. He introduced a highly centralised economy. Industrialization and collectivization under him resulted in the transformation of the USSR from an agrarian society into an industrial power.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He was a leader of the Indian independence movement under the tutelage of Mahatma Gandhi. He ruled India from its establishment as an independent nation in 1947 till 1964.

He is considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. Congress emerged as a dominating party at the national and state level, under him. He played a leading role in Non Alignment and projected India as a regional power in South Asia.
