The Nayankara System In The Vijayanagar Kingdom.

  • Vijayanagar rulers gave fair importance to the regional administration. The administration which prevailed in the provinces was known as ‘The Nayankara system’.
  • It was comparable to that of feudalism in Europe. As per the system, all the land was acquired by the rulers. He allocated the lands to his chiefs.
  • They behaved under his control and were conducted as feudal lords. This administrative system thrived during the duration of the Vijayanagar rulers. Established on the system most of the lands were administered among the Nayaks (landlords).
  • They resided with pomp and exhibit and designed forts for their safety. They approved the supremacy of the Vijayanagar rulers and functioned as their protectors.
  • The Nayaks who earned the lands from the ruler allocated them to the renters for cultivation. In turn, the Nayaks accumulated land tax regularly from the renters. The amount of tax was extremely high.
