There are two types of social differences. The first is overlapping differences in which two social groupswho oppose each other on some issue also oppose each other on some other issue. For example, Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland had overlapping differences. They opposed each other on religious lines as well as on economic lines with the Catholics being poorer.
The other type of difference is crosscutting difference where two groups who oppose each other on some issue but share common interests on some other issues. Thus Catholics and Protestants of Belgium oppose each other on cultural issues but are aligned to each other on economic issues.
