Kalikumar Tarkalankar is an elderly gentleman who is appointed at a boarding school in Kolkata. He boards a train which is too crowded and he happens to get into a compartment which is full of school boys who are travelling back to their school after vacation. Before he boarded the train, the boys are upset as a new teacher is coming to teach them Sanskrit and they plan to misbehave with him forcing him to leave. Kalikumar is very polite and considerate with the boys who are not happy with the presence of an elderly person among them as they could not talk freely about their new Sanskrit teacher. When he goes out at a station when the train stops, the boys eat up his sweets, and mangoes and blame it on mice in the compartment. Still Kalikumar is not angry and comments that if he knew there were mice in the train, he could have brought extra packet for them as well as for the boys. 

He buys mangoes, goodies and different things for the boys whenever the train stops and the boys grew fond of him, When they get to know that he is a Sanskrit teacher, not knowing who he is, suggest him to join their school as their previous teacher has retired and they suggest that they would trouble the new teacher (Kalikumar) so much that he would leave the school.  All this while he keeps his name secret. We can say that he is an experienced teacher who has a great understanding of child psyche and can mold them with his affection and patience. 

When boys come to know at the station, looking at the school Secretary who has come to receive him, they realize their folly, but already Kalimumar has made a place for himself in their hearts.
