M.Hamel had spent 40 years as a dedicated French teacher. His students were scared of both him and his 'mighty ruler' since he was a harsh disciplinarian.

He was, nonetheless, a decent man. Many villagers who had been educated by him at some point in time had come to hear him speak and pay homage to him on last day of school. He places a high value on education. French was regarded as the most wonderful language on the planet. However, he was saddened and disheartened by the fact that French was no longer taught when France was overtaken by Prussia.
