A character sketch of Oliver Lutkins
Oliver Lutkins was a cheerful and friendly looking deceitful man. In the short story, ‘The Hack Driver’, by the American Nobel Laureate Harry Sinclair Lewis, we come across the character of Oliver Lutkins.
Oliver Lutkins was a villager needed by court as a witness to a case. But he was arrogant and stubborn and never bothered to turn up to the many summons issued to him. In fact he was as slippery as an eel as he gave a complete slip to the narrator who had come in search of him.
Lutkins was a man of forty. He was red-faced and very cheerful looking. He was thickset about his middle portion. He wore dirty and worn-out clothes. He had a very friendly manner. He gave the impression that he really liked people.
Lutkins was extremely intelligent and deceitful. He was an excellent story-teller. He cooked up so many stories about Oliver Lutkins taking the narrator to all the wrong places and giving him the slip as he himself was Oliver Lutkins. The entire story is about Oliver Lutkins and his falsity.
