Sophie Wender is a girl who becomes David's friend.She is a little shorter and younger than David. Sophie wears a reddish-brown dungarees with a yellow shirt, the front of the dungarees were a darker material.
Her hair was tied on either side of her head with yellow ribbons.
She lives in waknuk.Her Mom stays at home while her dad is a carpenter.
On important aspect that revolves around her, is that she has an extra toe that she has been hiding.She lives in a isolated cottage so no one can find out about her.

Character Traits


Shy
She is a shy person because she has six toes. Sophie doesn't want anyone to find about her deviation because they will take her away. So she becomes very cautious meeting other people. For example, when meeting David for the first time she hides behind the bushes before actually encountering him.
Courageous/Brave
When David and Sophie were out playing in the river, they were spotted by Alan. He discovered that Sophie has six toes and planned to tell the officer about it. David fought him even though he was older, until Sophie hit him with a rock and knocked him out cold. Then both of them went back to Sophie's home to move away to the fringes. She was courageous and brave by saving David and herself, and was able to escape to the fringes with her family.
Adventurous 
Sophie is adventurous because when she met David at the high bank she was not afraid to slide down. She was exploring the woods too searching for something to do.

Significance to the novel

Becomes David's friend.
Sophie helps David, Rosalind and Petra escape when they are held captive in the fringes.
She is a deviation.
