Answer:
It was on a bright summer’s day in 1982 that I boarded the ‘KK’ Express bound for Delhi at the Trivandrum Central railway station, on my way back to Vijayawada after a short sojourn at home. The train was flagged off on time and I settled down comfortably with a book. I shared the air-conditioned second class cubicle with a couple and their two children who were quite friendly. They attempted to make small conversation with me though I tried to keep to myself and my book. The Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) came around and checked the tickets.
Just after the train left the next major station, Quilon, I went to the toilet to change into more comfortable dress for the long journey ahead. However, during the process I watched in horror my wallet falling through the toilet outlet.
In panic, since all my money and the train ticket were inside the wallet, I pulled the emergency chain inside the toilet. The chain just came off in my hand. I came out and pulled the first chain that I saw. This time the train screeched to a halt, after maybe 500 more metres.
It was in the summer holidays, I was travelling by train, to visit my grandparents. the train was running at full speed. Stations passed one after another. The train halted at a few stations only. it was the time of midnight. The train stopped at a station. most of the people were asleep.
a group of men entered our compartment, i woke my parents. the train started moving and gradually gained a high speed. They had pistols in their hands and wore masks. One of them who seemed to be their leader ordered the passengers to raise their hands up or he would shoot them. All turned pale. None dared utter a cry. They looked helplessly at one another.
The robbers ordered everyone to give all there money and valuables and snatched whatever they could and they threatened the ones who didnt give them. By this time the train had become slow. It seemed it was nearing a station. As soon as it stopped, the robbers jumped out and disappeared in the darkness of the night with all the wealth. On of the passengers ran to the station master to informed him of the robbery
.
I quickly called the police. They asked the passengers about the description of what the robbers wore. Just then, I discovered a wallet which belongs to the robbers. There was nothing inside but a piece of paper. There were some words written about where where the robbers had to meet, “Meet at the shop beside the petrol station ”.I gave the paper to them. In the end, they went to that shop and arrested the robbers.
the police appreciated me for helping them to catch the robbers. The very thought of that day makes me shiver. It was indeed a lucky escape from being murdered.
