So you would like to take a walk with me through the streets of my city? When would you wish to go? In the morning? In the afternoon? At evening? At night? You are leaving it to me? All right then, I choose early morning. Six o’clock.

You see this broad pavement here, with the wide road on one side and big buildings on the other? There is a lot of space here to walk on, isn’t there? The pavement is yours; you can swing your arms and walk fast. See, there are others doing that as well; and there is that old man with a walking-stick who can’t swing his arms, but at least now he can walk as briskly as he is able to. Later in the day, this pavement will be chock-a-block with people and he will risk bumping into others and falling.

Neither will we be as comfortable as we are now. There will be a sea of people around, but that is not the only reason why the pavement will seem much narrower than it is. There will an endless line of hawkers taking up positions on either side, and the sea will flow in the passage in between. It will flow in two directions at the same time—up and down—skirting the customers lined up before the hawkers selling clothes, curios, magazines, calendars and a hundred knick-knacks.

I have brought you out at the only time you can breathe in some fresh air. The first cars and buses have already come out on the streets. Another two hours and you will be breathing poison!

How innocent the city seems now, waking up from its sleep. There is a freshness on people’s faces as they greet the new day. It is strange how the buildings too look rested. Perhaps it has something to do with the slant and the softness of the sun’s rays at this time of the morning.

Here the pavement dwellers are folding up their makeshift beddings. Some are washing up at a tube well in a corner of the pavement. There is a stink as we pass them, but what fault is it of theirs? Blame society; blame the government.

Across the road, do you see where the tram is turning? That is the tram depot. Sometimes, when I want to break routine and get away from it all, I get into an empty tram here and let it take me to wherever it is going, and travel back the same way—it is relaxing and a good change.

How about a cup of tea at this road-side stall? There is nothing like it early in the morning. You can have it black, or plain, with cardamom or with ginger. If you want it milky, you just have to say, ‘Make it special.’

Isn’t it time we walked back? We will come again another day, maybe in the evening. We will see beautiful city once again while having plenty of fun...

Hope it helps!

Answer:

A Pleasant Walk Through the Town

My town Chandannagar is a small beautiful town. Once it was a French colony and still various French architectures are found in the city. An early morning walk through my town, refreshes my mind and provides me a solace.

River Ganga is flowing through our town and beside the river there is our heritage "strand" a worthy place to walk and spend time. While walking on the strand, I see the sunrise and hear the cacophony of birds. Pleasant breeze revives all energy. Many people gather there - some do jogging and exercise while some other just sit on the benches and enjoy the beauty of nature. While walking on the strand, many important buildings can be noticed. Among them there are the Court, the Museum, College and two renowned schools.

From strand I walk through various alleys and observe the activities of the people. Some hastily go towards station to catch the train, some gather in front of the vegetable and fish market, some children are seen waiting for their school bus while some others are busy in their daily work.

There is a flyover in our town and the surrounding area is covered with nothing but greeneries. A walk through that place swipes away all the weariness. This place provides us a lot of fresh air and energy. There are many tea stalls and breakfast counter where one can have morning tea and breakfast amidst nature.

Though my town is a small one, it is really a wonderful place to live in.
