Explanation:

A friend (Ramya) from Delhi pays a visit to his Telangana-based mate (Pooja). The exchange is described below.

Ramya : good morning, What a beautiful morning this is! However, why are you donning your new attire today?

Pooja : Bonalu is today, my friend. It is a Telangana carnival festival. Folk music and traditional attire are very prevalent.

Ramya : Exactly what is Bonalu?

Pooja: In Telangana, it denotes a supper. It is observed in the months of July or August during Aashaadam. We are grateful to Kali.

Ramya : What else do we do to honour this event

Pooja : Women carry earthen pots with the bonam inside on their heads. Together with a saree and some bangles, we present it to Goddess Kali. In order to honour Goddess Kali for protecting us from dangerous diseases, women decorate their pots and sing songs to her.

Ramya : It seems really fascinating. Can I participate in this festival this year as well, if you don't mind?

Pooja : Yes, my cherished friend. Having you here with us today would be wonderful.

Bonalu (Festival)

The word Bonam is a contraction of the Sanskrit loanword Bhojanam, which in Telugu denotes a supper or a feast. It serves as a sacrifice for the Mother Goddess. In a fresh brass or earthen pot decorated with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion, and a lit lamp on top, women boil rice that has been prepared with milk and jaggery. Women travel between temples carrying the pots while making a gift of the Bonam, turmeric-vermilion, bangles, and saree to the Mother Goddess.

Typically, Bonalu is observed during Ashada Masam, which occurs in July or August. On the first and last days of the festival, special poojas are offered to the goddess Yellamma. After vows are kept, the festival is seen as a way of showing thanks to the Goddess.

The Ritual

Various areas of the twin cities observe Bonalu. On the first Sunday of Ashadham, festivities are performed at the temple at Golconda Fort in Hyderabad. The Balkampet Yellamma Temple in Balkampet, the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad, and the Pochamma and Katta Maisamma Temple of Chilkalguda as well as the Matheswari Temple of Lal Darwaza in the Old City of Hyderabad on the second and third Sundays, respectively. Other temples where Bonalu is observed include the Akkanna Madanna temple in Haribowli and the Muthyalamma temple in Shah Ali Banda. Every year, thousands of devotees gather to honour Mahakali.

Rangam

The following morning of the celebration is when Rangam, or "Performing the Oracle," takes place. A woman performs the ritual while perched atop an earthen pot and calls Goddess Mahakali onto her. When followers inquire about the future, she predicts the coming year. This occurs before the parade actually begins. The sixth generation oracle, Kumari Erupula Swarnalatha, is the current oracle of Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam and other significant temples in Secunderabad. Kum, Kumari's older sister, Swaroopa before them, her grandmother Bagamma, and other ancestors like Jogamma and Poshamma have all provided oracles in the past.

Ghatam

A copper pot known as a ghatam is adorned with images of the Mother Goddess. A priest is responsible for carrying the Ghatam; he or she is covered in turmeric and is dressed in the customary Dhoti. From the first day of the festival till the last day, when it is submerged in water, the Ghatam is carried in procession. The sound of drums is typically heard during the Ghatam.

The Ghatam is immersed to mark the end of the festivities. The parade is led by the Ghatam of the Haribowli Akkanna Madanna Temple, which is mounted atop an elephant and is followed by mounted horses and models of Akkanna and Madanna. Ghatams are immersed at Nayapul after a glittering procession and show of much pomp and circumstance concludes it in the evening.

Decoration of pot

Rice is cooked with milk, jaggery, and other ingredients by women in the home in a new earthen or brass pot that is decorated with neem leaves, turmeric, and vermillion. Women make offerings of bonam, including bangles and sarees, to the Mother Goddess at temples while carrying these pots on their heads.
