Will science and technology lead to destruction of the world?

Probably not.

One thing people often forget when considering such matters is that all the ill effects attributed to technology are really caused by the exponential increase in human population which has been going on since the dawn of agriculture.

All living things will multiple exponentially given a chance, nature keeps populations under control through starvation, disease, and predation, all of which breed misery.

Since well before the dawn of agriculture, but particularly since then, humans have had the ability to shift the balance and keep nature at bay. Of course, this is just as unsustainable for us as it is for bacteria. ANY species that continues to grow exponentially will eventually experience a catesphic crash of death and dispair. This is true for any species, anywhere in the world under any circumstances.

So, yeah, we've raped the planet fairly well and used our technology to sweep right past it's carrying capacity, well on our way to collapse, haven't we?

Well, no. Actually, in the last few decades, humanity has done what no other species in the history of the planet has every done before. As a whole, we have voluntarily arrested our population growth.

Population is only growing today because of the latent post war booms in Indian, Chinese, and African populations. If trends continue, in a generation, global population might actually start to fall.

And that's a good thing, because while we can feed ten billion people for a while if we have to, we will have no resiliency in the global economic and natural systems that keep us all alive. Personally, I believe we should aim for long term stability at something like five billion or fewer. At those levels, we can use our technology to clean up the planet, restore natural systems, and recover the biosphere's natural defenses.

And we can't do any of that without technology--escpecially controlling our population--because it's birth control that's made THAT possible.

Science and technology are leading us towards destruction

Good morning everyone present; I am here to speak against ‘science and technology are leading us towards destruction’.

Science, like fire can either cook man’s food or cook the man himself. Nothing is harmful until it is used with harmful intentions. Similarly science in itself is not disastrous. It is the ill and inhumane use that makes it so. Alfred Nobel, one of the most renowned scientists was criticized so much when he invented dynamite. However, later on when it was used to clear mountains and rocks while making roads across rough, mountainous terrains, his invention was highly praised.

Science has the potential to solve all of man’s problems and challenges provided it is put to right use. But this potential is not being explored. Man is busy misusing science. For example, our planet earth has so much of Uranium, Thorium, Plutonium, etc. that if used optimally, abundant power can be generated for all the people living in all the countries of the planet. The sad thing is man’s focus is on creating deadly nuclear weapons out of these wonderful resources given to him by beneficent Nature.

All the problems pertaining to pollution, environmental degradation, etc. can be solved using science. All the cities of the world can be converted into smart cities using science; all the vehicles that emit toxic gases can be converted into zero emission vehicles using science; all the sewage, garbage, effluents, toxic fumes coming out of chimneys can be turned into non-polluting substances using science. However this is being done only in the most advanced countries of the world.

Whenever science was ever used for destructive purposes, man was always behind such misuses. Science is not destructive, it is man who is so.
