The poem also unveils the painful truths of human desire.

“Success is Counted Sweetest” A Comment on Value of Success: As this poem is about success, the speaker explains that failures can understand the meanings of success. She has used the images of soldiers to express her ideas about success. At the outset, she talks about soldiers who have won the war but still do not understand the real meanings of success because they have not experienced the pain of failure. Later, she refers to a dying soldier of the losing side, who can hear the victorious soldiers celebrating their day. Hence, the one who is losing the battle of his life can sense the true spirit of success. What enchants the readers is a stark comparison she has made between winning and losing sides to make clarify her points to the readers.

Success is Counted Sweetest by Emily Dickinson  addresses the relation of “need” and “triumph.” Basically, only in experiencing that “need” can a person really appreciate the best things in life.

Explanation:

  • This conflict shows variance as a individual may be in a situation where happiness exists because of the change, or “agony can be present because the good thing only exists because of sheer Sacrifice. This definition has a sort of rationalization in that people who have things that “need” without question may sometimes take those things for granted, suggesting that they do not consider the things at a higher level.
  • Many who succeed never really understand it – only those who lose or miss anything would truly realize how wonderful it will be if it succeeded. The dilemma raised by this poem is that the only individuals that can enjoy it most is not those who work for longer to succeed but also those who will never succeed. Therefore, nobody really appreciates success i  to its full desert, those who once had the potential lack the desire to do so
  • No matter how grand the natural object/element is, a person will only appreciate it to its fullest if they drastically need it. A person, will not appreciate something as grand as “nectar” without  needing it. That is, only the person starving can genuinely appreciate food. The dilemma here is that as soon as one has their first bite, they are no more starving, and they fast lose their ability to appreciate food.
  • The soldiers of the victorious army not only cannot have the same sense of appreciation of victory as the losing soldiers, they do not even grasp what it is. Nevertheless, those soldiers left “defeated” and “dying” on the battlefield, would listen to the joy of victory from the other side
