• On the basis of the Act of Union, btw England and Scotland,resulted in the formation of ' United Kingdom of Great Britain' imposed it's influence on Scotland.

• Scotland's distinctive culture and political institutions were dramatically suppressed.

• Scottish highlanders were forribden to speak Gaelic language or to wear national dress and large numbers were forcibly driven out of land.
