Swami Vivekananda the cyclonic monk of the Orient, created an epoch breaking history in the World’s Parliament of Religions, 1893, held for the first time in the United States of America.

Swami Vivekananda delivered several speeches in the various sessions of the Parliament held at various dates to emphasise the value of Religion. He was the herald of Hinduism to the West. Through his speeches he had built a bridge of religion between the Occident and the Orient.

It is through him that the West learnt of the true meaning of the Vedas. He preached and spread the concept of Practical Vedanta.

Swamiji’s first lecture was on 11th September 1893 at the Permanent Memorial Art Palace, Chicago.

His opening words in his baritone voice, ‘My Sisters and Brothers of America’, thundered round the Hall and everyone broke into a loud applause honouring Swamiji with a standing ovation.

In this speech Swamiji asserted, " I come from the most ancient order of monks in the world, the Vedic order of sannyasins, a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance.!"

In the speech, ‘ Why we disagree (15 September 1893)’ Swamiji emphasised on the universality of all religions.

He talked of India and Hinduism and how both embraced people of all religion, caste and creed. He asserted the saying of the Gita, “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.”

He cited the Hindu tale from the Upanishad- ‘The frog in the Well’ as he explained the reason of disagreement between people of different sects and religions. He warned people not to be engulfed by  forces of sectarianism and bigotry. He urged for religious tolerance and to put an end to fanaticism.

In the lecture ‘Paper on Hinduism’ (19 September 1893) Swamiji elaborately explained Vedanta philosophy, the concept of God, soul and body as preached by Hinduism.

In the speech 'Buddhism, the Fulfillment of Hinduism' (26 September 1893) Swamiji  talked about origin of Buddhism, the inter-relationship between Buddhism and Hinduism, its association with Brahmanism, and the Vedas and how Buddhism cannot survive without Hinduism.

In the last lecture,' Address at the Final Session' (27 September 1893), Swamiji emphasised on the goal of the Parliament of World's religion which was to prove to the world that holiness, purity and charity were not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system had produced men and women of the most exalted character. He concluded with the request "Help and not Fight," "Assimilation and not Destruction," "Harmony and Peace and not Dissension."
