Dear Diary,
I think I did something really foolish.
You know what, NO, I was helping my friend Bassanio, it wasn’t naive. I’m only saying this because I’m scared, frightened, terrorized. The thing is that I’m petrified because my good old friend needed to borrow three thousand ducats and no wasn’t an answer.
Anyhow, all of my money is on ships “sailing” back to me, so I made a deal with ill-minded and heartless Shylock to lend money to my friend. Although he told me not to because something could go very wrong, I insisted and signed the contract. This horrendous monster and I signed the bond together and it stated that, if I wasn’t able to pay him back what I owed to him (two days ago), I would have to pay him with one pound of my flesh.
At this time my luck couldn’t get worse, guess what has happened now - my money got lost in the middle of the sea. Now Shylock can legally take one pound of flesh from me, it is stated in a contract with my signature on it.
I can’t understand how someone could do this to a person. What have I done to deserve this?
What did I do to Shylock for him to want me to suffer like this? Why couldn’t I just be like everyone else he lends money to, only give him a high interest and give him more money if I return his money after the date? I prefer that than letting him kill me, take a pound of my flesh and bleeding my way to death. I just don’t understand the deal with Shylock, he is such an insensitive person.
Right now, I’m in prison, writing in my diary, fearful for my fate. I have no money and no lawyer to support me in court. I am hopeless I don’t want to die, I don’t want to bleed out to death; only a miracle can save me now. Oh god what will I do, tomorrow is the court! I need to stay calm, I can’t panic, it will only make it worse. Well the only thing left to do is to pray and hope for the best.

A messenger informs Lorenzo and Jessica that Portia will soon return from the monastery, and they prepare to greet the mistress of the house. Trumpets sound as Bassanio, Antonio, and Gratiano arrive. Portia greets Bassanio, who introduces her to Antonio, who reports in turn that he has been acquitted in the courts of Venice. Gratiano and Nerissa begin to argue over the ring with which he promised never to part. Nerissa chastises her husband not for hurting her feelings, but for breaking his own promise. Gratiano insists that he gave the ring to a lawyer’s clerk as a fee, and Portia criticizes him for parting with so precious a gift, saying that her own husband would never have parted with his ring. Gratiano corrects her and reveals that Bassanio has, in fact, given his ring to the lawyer who saved Antonio. Portia declares that her husband’s heart is as empty as his finger, and she promises never to kiss him until he produces the ring. Bassanio pleads with Portia to understand that he gave the ring to a worthy man to whom he was indebted, but Portia dismisses his reasoning, saying it is more likely that Bassanio gave the ring to another woman. Portia vows to be equally unfaithful, threatening to offer the same worthy man anything she owns. Antonio intercedes on behalf of Bassanio and Gratiano, asking the women to accept his soul should either Bassanio or Gratiano prove unfaithful again. Portia and Nerissa relent, giving each of their husbands a ring and suggesting that they exercise more care in keeping these rings. Bassanio and Gratiano recognize these as the same rings they gave to the lawyer and his clerk. Portia reveals that she was the lawyer in Venice, and Nerissa her clerk. Antonio receives news that some of his ships have miraculously arrived in port, and Lorenzo is told that he will inherit Shylock’s fortune. Everyone rejoices in their good fortune.
