Answer:

Sledging is one of many psychological stressors athletes may face in their quest for sporting glory, along with playing in front of a passionate crowd or the sheer importance of the event being played.

Sledging is often referred to as a form of psychological warfare, where the aim is to break the concentration of an opposing player or, at the very least, instill enough doubt in his or her mind to create a mental distraction or a physiological change. This, in turn, can disrupt or change the opposing player’s technique, focus or game plan, which can ultimately have a detrimental impact upon his or her performance.

Insulting a batter on their skill level, for instance, puts additional pressure on the athlete, leading to an increased likelihood that they’ll choke under the pressure.

With very little separating the physical fitness, abilities and skills of high-level athletes, many competitors attempt to get a mental edge on their opponents by mentally preparing themselves for all situations, including such purposeful distractions.

By taking the time to work on developing effective concentration and cognitive strategies, athletes can learn to ignore or reframe any comments that are thrown at them by their opposition to inspire them to engage in higher levels of performance. Performance routines and relaxation techniques are two strategies players commonly use to cope with sledging.

However, in recent times this banter (selding) become more than just provocation. Recently it was noticed that this banters turn personal. The frequent use of abusive language between players increased a lot. In the recently concluded series between South Africa and Australia, we did see an incident between Quinton De Kock and David Warner. The situation had become so volatile that other players and the match referee had to intervene. Though this was not the first instance of such an occurrence, we do see that the level of sledging has dramatically increased. This would definitely need to be kept in check to maintain the dignity of the sport.

There is a thin line between passive sledging and aggression. As long as it is under control, the competitiveness of the game will grow higher. Heated moments in the game is a nature of cricket, and it is unavoidable. But sledging should remain in the game for the betterment and should be monitored by the ICC (in the case of cricket).

Aggression and sledging are an essential part of sports :-

FOR-

In sports especially in cricket, football, the players tend to become aggressive and also does sledging with other players.

This is justified to some extent as, cricket, football requires not only physical activity but also mental tactics especially when your team is losing.

Aggression and sledging are done to intimidate players of other team, so that they lose their confidence and calm and thereby might even lose by a single notch down.

AGAINST-

Although aggression and sledging are done , it is justified to some extent only. It is never correct to verbally abuse or weaken someone down mentally.

This might create a bad impact and hamper future tournaments. This might even affect the ongoing game as everyone has different capabilities to bear aggression and intimidation.
