Good morning everyone present here. Distinguished judges, honorable guests, respected teachers and dear fellow students, I stand in front of you to express my views on the topic ‘should social networking websites be banned.’ And I will speak in favor of the motion.
Well, as a student I strongly feel that these social networking sites such as Facebook or Orkut, Youtube, Instagram, etc. have become a source of major distractions for the students. Young boys and girls seem to have become inordinately addicted to these sites. They are thoughtlessly and uselessly wasting their precious time on these useless sites. Wise people says that ‘time well utilized is the time well spent’ but the youth generation of today is only and only wasting their time on chatting, messaging, uploading photographs and modifying profiles. The smart phones and 4G connections have made the situations worse. Accessing such sites has become so easy that the young girls and boys are using these sites almost everywhere and almost all the time.
I ask you a few questions: ‘where will it lead to? Are we heading to only Facebook and Twitter perfection? Where are the objectives of attaining the status of the advanced country?’ There are so many challenges that we as well as the nation face. Challenges such as population, mismanagement of our natural resources, poverty, unemployment, corruption, pollution, etc. Is it not a pathetic attitude of youth to lose such objectives out of the sight and instead waste their time, money and energy on such useless sites so recklessly? Will the sites like Facebook, Orkut, Instagram, Youtube or Twitter ever help us to change the bad conditions and problems of our society and nation?
I have seen my fellow friends being more worried about connecting to their friends on Facebook or Whatsapp more than their studies, assignments and projects. The major disadvantage of the increasing use of these networking sites is the spreading of obscenity. This is having a very negative impact on the impressionable minds of the young children and leading them astray.
I strongly believe that the parents, teachers and the government must look into the problems caused by these networking sites and must formulate a strategy either to curb or completely stop its fast growing negative influence on the minds of our youth generation. Our youth is the future of our nation. We cannot allow them to waste their precious time in these sites. The same time must be spent on studying, research and developing leadership or other life-skills. It is our moral duty as well as responsibility to lead our youth on the right path.
I would like to appeal to all of you to contribute in making our youth especially the school students aware of the disadvantages of such social networking sites. I would also like to appeal to the concerned government authorities to make and implement some strict laws on the functioning of such networking sites in our country. I am sure that with our concerted efforts we shall be able to remove this problem of addiction of networking on our youths.
THANK YOU!

Disadvantages of Social Networking: Surprising Insights from Teens
by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD
SOCIABILITY
“Honestly, I sometimes truly wish that ‘tools’ such as the iPhone (or any smartphone), laptops, iPads, tablets, etc. hadn’t been invented. Sure, they’re great, incredibly useful, and fun time-killers. But the way teenagers abuse them, and turn them into mini social control rooms is frankly awful.”
At first glance, you might think this quote came from a parent or grandparent lamenting on the disadvantages of social networking and how social media has doomed today’s children. But it was written by a Seattle-area tenth grader as part of an assignment to answer the question, “How has online social networking influenced your relationships with friends and family?”
This student goes on to write, “The teenage way of life has completely changed from what it was only twenty years ago. Now, there is a dramatic decrease in face-to-face communication, which reduces our generation’s ability to interact with others on a speaking level.”
Not coincidentally, this same message was echoed by the young people interviewed in Tomorrow’s Change Makers: Reclaiming the Power of Citizenship for a New Generation. Youth engaged in their communities claim that face-to-face interactions is what motivates them to make a difference in the world.
This is a two-part article gleaned from reviewing the essays of a class of tenth graders, with their permission, of course. It is meant to generate additional discussion on the benefits and disadvantages of social networking and its effect on healthy youth development.
