In Indian culture, the dowry system is an influential vice that has created its distinctive space within several communities. With the masses adopting the dowry system, which once served as a matrimonial ceremony, it has now turned into an atrocious practice in society. A gift exchange that once brought harmony between the families of the bride and the groom has now ruthlessly amended itself into a monetary extraction from the bride’s family. Dilapidating into a social evil, this phenomenon has struck and shattered the foundation on which relationships were once built for the families of the bride and the groom. Be it cash, gold, or property rights, the additional financial responsibility is proving to be burdensome on the brides’ families in India

• Dowy seems innocuous, simply defined. These are presents for marriage, normally money from the family of a bride paid to family of a bride to settle marriage. Yet look a bit closer and you will find a system that is as disgusting and corrosive to women's rights, such as child marriage, female mutilation and male guardianship
• Dowries are common practice in more than a dozen countries around the world. The practice oppresses women in almost every instance, either directly or indirectly. It often leads to violence and harassment. Even if the Government banned teverywhere to promote gender and economic equality.

• As a result of the dowry tradition in India, more than 8,000 women die annually. Sometimes, husband or in-laws kill a woman because her family cannot fulfill the dowry demand asked for. Many times, after harassment and abuse women commit suicide because they do not meet the requirements.
• India has the world's most child brides and the dowry scheme partially explains this trend. The younger a girl is, the lower their dowry price, so that families can save money, at young age, marry their girls.
• Because women in a family are seen as a financial burden, many parents abort or allow girls to die after childbirth. This leads to gross underestimation of women and a huge disparity between men and women.
• India has one of the lowest rates of female labor participation in the world, where dowries are the most common. This is partially because dowry promote the idea that a woman should not receive an outside income from the family of her husband. Sometimes it is also considered an affront when a woman decides to follow a profession after paying her dowry.
• Many poor families are forced to take loans with high interest rates, to sell their land in order to raise money, to promise to pay installments, and other situations that may lead to debt paralysis.
• Dowy is traditional and restrictive— but this does not mean that the tradition is solid enough not to be repealed. In India, the targets are being scrapped by female rights and economic justice movements. There is more to be done, however. Records are explicitly prohibited under the statute, but lack of enforcement is misery.
