Joint family and nuclear family are the two basic concepts of sustenance followed by the human civilization since ages. In ancient times, people focused on being nomads as their way of survival in the crude world. Later on, the grouping of individuals started in order to stay protected in a wild environment they were surrounded with. Lastly, civilized living erupted near the banks of the river when human beings realized that water was the most necessary thing needed for being alive and to nurture each and everything. From there only, the concept of families started. People grouped themselves as wives and husbands, mothers and fathers, and in other emotional relationships.
Anyhow, development brings in distinction, in ways of living among every species that exists on this planet. Similar was the case with Homo-sapiens, people started living within large families based on their blood-relations. Living within a joint family was referred to as the best way of survival because it helped shape each other's lives and brought in ideologies such as compassion and sharing to the psyche of every child since birth. There are multiple benefits that were introduced by this system of living. However, every coin possesses two phases and different conditions bring in different acts that have to be followed by the population. Due to urbanization and modern lifestyle, people started focusing more on individuality rather than dependency and popped out of their joint families to create a circle of their own.
It is very true that the joint family has lost its luster because, as mentioned earlier, every situation has two outcomes- positive as well as negative. To elaborate, in a family with multiple people of different generations causes chaos and personal issues within the group. It starts to create differences in perspective as well as factors like inequality and jealousy also pop up. These conditions are never great to raise kids as their sub-conscious mind at childhood is the creator of their character for life. Therefore, people follow break-up and estrange to form nuclear families. However, if one can opt to think of a few guidelines to operate a big family and each person is given equal importance or even hate (for a similar reason); joint families will gain popularity again.
