Answer:There was a boy of about twelve years. He was sturdy with countrified hair and black eyes. He liked walking barefoot. He had a curiosity to visit the river which was beyond the mountain. One day his parents went out of the village leaving the boy alone at home with a sketchy meal. He found an opportunity in it to realize his dream of visiting the river.
The boy put the loaf of bread in a newspaper and set out on his journey. After some time, he met a wood cutter and enquired with him how far the river was. The wood cutter replied that it was away by seven miles. He also warned the boy that it might be difficult to return before evening. But, the boy continued his journey. He came down the mountain and entered the valley. He enquired again with a passing by girl who said that the river was twenty miles away. But, the boy wanted to continue his journey.
After an hour, the boy met a shepherd boy who said that the river was nearby. The boy felt hungry and shared his loaf of bread with the shepherd boy. After walking for some more time, he felt discouraged as the river was not yet in sight. But he came more than half way and could not go back. So, he continued his journey with much determination. After walking for some more time in impressive silence, he went round a sharp bend. The silence broke into sound and he found the river tumbling over rocks far down the valley. He ran down and entered the river. He felt the coldness of the mountain water. He felt very happy as his dream came true.

The short story "How Far is the River" by Ruskin Bond is about a young boy who wishes to find a river that he has never seen before.
A tall mountain is covered in bushes, and trees and the forest is situated between the boy and the river. The youngster is aware that there is a river that flows beyond that mountain, but he has never seen it. As youngsters are the most inquisitive of all ages, he longs to see that. And he gets the chance to find that river one day. His parents rarely leave the house for the entire day. However, they went to see some of their friends that day. so, the narrator brought a loaf of bread to munch and out on his quest with no shoes.
The boy first encounters a woodcutter. the woodcutter expresses concern that it will be challenging for the boy to return home before the day is through. the boy disregards his advice and then encounters a girl coming in the other direction. She says that the river is 25 miles away. The narrator disregards her facts and encounters a local child tending to his cattle herd after trudging down the hard route in the heat. By stating that the river is only around the mountain, this youngster gives the correct information. They share a lunchtime meal. After that, they continue to travel long distances together, but the child chooses the route that leads to his village. Once more, the narrator is by himself.
the narrator walks on despite feeling lonely and annoyed. He believes that if he goes back home after this, it will be embarrassing for him. He keeps walking, unconcerned by the passage of time or pain. He eventually hears the river softly gurgling. He runs toward the sound, where he jumps into the river's water. He enjoys it even though it is cold like snow.
