The Cold Desert: Ladakh

Ladakh is a cold desert in India. It lies in the Great Himalayas, on the eastern side of Jammu and Kashmir. It has the mighty Karakoram Range in the North and in the south, it is bound by the Zanskar mountains. Several rivers flow through Ladakh. The most important one is the Indus.

The Sahara Desert

The Sahara desert covers a large part of North Africa. It has the following features:

  • Sahara is the world’s largest desert. It covers an area of around 8.54 million square kilometres (which is more than the total area of India!!).
  • The desert touches eleven countries which are as follows: Algeria, Morocco, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara.
  • It has gravel plains and elevated plateaus with a bare rocky surface. These rocky surfaces, at some places, are more than 2500 m high.

Here is your Answer.....

sahara desert is known as hot desert whereas ladakh is known as cold desert . in sahara the temprature rises upto 57 degrees and the rainfall is less than 7.6cm whereas in ladakh the temprature is less than -20 degrees and the rainfall during winters and maximum upto 27 degrees during summer time when the ice melts. Hot and cold deserts are the landscapes with very low precipitation. Both are dry, arid, and rocky. Both have the least rainfall with respect to other types of deserts. The precipitation sometimes evaporates before it hits the ground.

Ladakh (cold desert):

Ladakh is a cold desert in India. It lies in the Great Himalayas, on the eastern side of Jammu and Kashmir. It has the mighty Karakoram Range in the North and in the south, it is bound by the Zanskar mountains. Several rivers flow through Ladakh.

Extreme cold temperatures make vegetation in Ladakh extremely sparse, but one can find a little vegetation along rivers on high slopes and in irrigated places. People grow barley, potatoes, peas, beans and turnip in vegetable and apples, apricots and walnuts in fruits in the irrigated places.

Climate of ladhak : In summers, the temperature during the day is just above zero degrees and the night temperature is much below -30°C. In winters the temperature remains as low as -40°C most of the time. The rainfall in this region is as low as 10 cm annually.
