• The first cell was named and discovered by Robert Hooke in 1669. He remarked that it looked strangely similar to cellula or small rooms which monks inhabited, thus the name. However what Hooke observed was dead cell walls of plant cells in a cork.

• The first man to witness a live cell under a microscope was Anton van Leeuwenhoek, who in 1674 described the algae Spirogyra. (Note: In this time, better magnification devices had been invented.)

• Then in the 19th Century, Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schleiden along with Rudolph Virchow developed the cell theory which states that-

1. All living organisms are made out of cells.
2. Cells are the basic structural and functional unit of an organism.
3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
