Explanation:

The main sources of information about this civilization are the Vedic texts which were compiled after the age of the Rig Veda. These were the Sam Veda Samhita, the Yajur Veda Samhita, Atharva Veda Samhita, Brahmanas and Upanishads. All these later Vedic texts were compiled in the upper Gangetic basin in 1000-500 BC.

A detailed note on family and lineage system under later Vedic period

Explanation:

  • During the later Vedic period the basis of social organization remained the same as in the early Vedic era. The main social entity was the family. There were several members of each family. Often many families lived under the same male member 's leadership (Kulpati)
  • The son was entirely under his father's control. In the family the father, who could also disinherit his son. The right to birth (the eldest son after the father) was greater and male ancestors were worshiped.
  • The status of women worsened. Women could not attend the Sabha; they were excluded of the heritage, they were unable to own property ; anything that women earned became the property of their husbands or sons. A daughter had been regarded as "the source of misery"
  • There has been a change in the marriage rules to more rigidity, and child marriage used to take place. In a ritual context also, a clear attempt to establish a gender hierarchy by distinguishing between men and women and ensuring their subordination to the former can be seen.
