DRAINAGE means the river system of an area.

Drainage system in India consists of ~

▪ the Himalayan river system.

▪the peninsular river system.

Most of the Himalayan rivers are perennial which means they carry water in their course throughout the year like the ganga , Yamuna etc

the source of water is either the rainwater or the melting of snow from the high mountains.

the originate from the north of mountain ranges.

the major river of this system is the indus and the bhramputra .

these rivers are long and joined by important tributaries. these rivers have well developed deltas. its prominent rivers are the indus, the ganga, the bhramputra.

▪ the peninsular rivers are seasonal as they carry water in their course only during rainy season.

most rivers have shorter and shallower courses compared to Himalayan rivers.

most of the rivers originate from western ghats eg godavaei,mahanadi where as some rivers originate from central highlands and drain in the aribian sea .

the prominent river of peninsular river system are tapi,narmada, mahanadi, Krishna etc
