Mountains are usually caused by convergence of tectonic plates. For example, the himalayas are produced by collision of Indo-australian plate with the Eurasian plate. Due to plate frictional movements , earthquakes happen.

Movements of tectonic plates create volcanoes along the plate boundaries, which erupt and form mountains.

Most of the world’s largest mountains are underneath the ocean. For eg, mid atlantic ridge is due to boundaries of North american and Eurasian plate on the north and it separates the South american and african plates in the South.

There is a fault in Iceland due to NA and eurasian plate divergence and there is a possibility that the valley will grow large(called the Mid Atlantic rift) as the plates move away from each other at the rate of 2 cm per year.

Andes mountains are formed by subduction ( a convergent plate boundary) of Nazca plate with the South American plate.

Most volcanos in the “ Pacific ring of fire” are due to tectonic plate activity.

Mountains are quite steeper compared to hills and are the highest points on a particular location. Eastern ghats in india are remnants of supercontinent Rhodinia

Highest volcano in solar system- Olympus mons on planet mars. Wide crater of 60 kms and thrice the height of Mt Everest.
