Clouds and Waves by Rabindranath Tagore
The verse is the poet’s tribute to a child’s imagination. The little child is talking to her mother and tells her that the folks who live up in the clouds call her and say, it’s so much fun out there, they play the whole day and the golden dawn and the silver moon are their chums.
And when the little girl asks them how she can get to them, they tell her to come to the edge of the earth, lift up her hands to the sky, and she will be taken up into the clouds. Though greatly tempted, she resists and tells them that her mother is waiting for her at home and she can’t leave her mother and go.
But she has a better game, yet another fragment of the little girl’s imagination. She tells her mother that she will become the cloud and her mother will be the moon. Then she will cover her mother with both her hands and the huge sky will be their roof-top.
There is a dream-like imagery that permeates throughout the poem.
“An endearing poem of a child who refuses tempting invitations, instead staying with her mother at playtime, blissful in her company.
Wordwoven with great tenderness by the greatest poet of all times, a gentle verse for all the little ones and their mothers!”
