Answer:

Dialogue and negotiation is one of the things Nelson Mandela is best remembered for. Although he was always quick to point out that he was not the only person who should be credited with negotiating an end to apartheid that avoided civil war, it was Mandela’s message of peace and reconciliation that brought South Africans together at a dangerous time.

“Unfortunately none of us can escape blame for the situation in which humankind finds itself. In almost every part of the world, human beings find reasons to resort to force and violence in addressing differences that we surely should attempt to resolve through negotiation, dialogue and reason.” –

Answer:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (/ mænˈdɛlə /; [1] English: [xolíɬaɬa mandɛ̂ːla]; 18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist who served as South Africa's first president from 1994 to 1999.  the first black head of state and the first to be elected in a fully representative election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by promoting racial reconciliation. In his view of the African nationalist and socialist, he served as president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.

Xhosa, Mandela was born in the Thembu dynasty in Mvezo, Union of South Africa. He studied law at the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Witwatersrand before working as a lawyer in Johannesburg. When he became involved in anti-colonial politics and African nationalism, he joined the ANC in 1943 and formed its youth wing in 1944. After the white supremacist National Party established apartheid, the racist system that gave whites, Mandela and the ANC committed itself to its overthrow. He was elected president of the ANC's Transvaal branch, most notably for his role in the 1955 Defiance Campaign and the Congress of the People.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison, divided between Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. Amid growing growing domestic and international pressures and fears of a civil war, President F. W. de Klerk released him in 1990. Mandela and de Klerk led efforts to negotiate an end to apartheid, which led to the 1994 national election in which Mandela led the ANC. to win and become president. Leading a comprehensive coalition government that announced a new constitution, Mandela emphasized racial reconciliation and created a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses.  Economically, his administration maintained the original framework for freedom despite his social beliefs, and introduced measures to promote land reform, fight poverty and expand health care services.  Internationally, Mandela served as mediator in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombings and served as general secretary of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. He rejected a second term in office and was succeeded by his deputy, Thabo Mbeki. Mandela became a government official and focused on fighting poverty and HIV / AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation's charity.

Mandela was a controversial figure for most of his life. Although critics on the right criticized him as a communist terrorist and those on the far left considered him too eager to negotiate and reconcile with apartheid supporters, he gained worldwide fame for his activism.  Internationally recognized as a symbol of democracy and social justice, he has won more than 250 awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize. He is highly regarded in South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Thembu family name, Madiba, as "Father of the Nation".
