Explanation:

hone self-discipline.

Writing every day in a diary can be a great way to clear your head, make plans, reflect on the day, etc.

I like gratitude type journals. They tend to be short, sweet, and it doesn’t matter if someone else reads them (and they find out that I really was pleased that my dog stopped barking when I asked her to stop).

I don’t tend to write things that I want to reread again in a number of days, weeks, months or years. Because if I use the time to journal and get the emotions out, all I do is reingest them when I do reread it. And that pretty much defeats the purpose of using the journal to get rid of the emotions.

My friend’s grandmother kept diaries for years. Every day she recorded things along the lines of

Today was a perfect spring (summer, winter, fall) day (morning, afternoon, evening, night, whatever). I made (ate) the most delicious (fill in your own blank here). Loved watching the children across the street play with their ball, ride their bikes, march in a parade.

It won’t matter if someone else stumbles on it.

On the other hand, if it is a diary that consists of any of the below, I’d exercise some caution.

I just discovered the easiest way to cheat on my tests …

My boss just propositioned me at work. In order to get an increase in salary, I have to submit to him xxx times per week. I really want to buy a new car and it’s going to be the easiest way to make the downpayment. I really hope my partner (boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, other) doesn’t mind. I really want that new car.

XXX has treated me horribly because … I need to see how I can best seek revenge so that I don’t get caught.

xxx is incredibly hot. I want to xxx with them in the backseat of the car

Do you have a way to keep your private stuff private? If you do it electronically, how strong are your passwords? Are you possibly wanting to write under a different name so it doesn’t reflect on you? Do you care if someone else breaks into the account and reads it?

When it comes to paper diaries, know that those locks are very flimsy and easy to break. Please have someplace that is private for you to store it away when not in use.

When I was younger, my sisters both found my diaries. They read them aloud to their friends and laughed at me for weeks. It felt like forever passed before it all died down. It was nothing salacious, but it was my private world and stuff I didn’t want to be shared.

What are you OK with people finding? What are you comfortable with them sharing?

Your daily patterns and habits are up to you. Just exercise good sense.
