Dear Diary

Today I am going to tell you about the sumptuary law in France.

(I) Sumptuary laws (1294 to 1789) were laws which forced social codes of food and dress upon various strata of society in France.

(ii) These laws were intended to stress social chain of command and control conduct of those considered 'social inferiors', i.e., the unprivileged.

(iii) They kept social inferiors from wearing certain garments and devouring certain nourishments and drinks related to the nobility. According to these laws, no one but eminence could wear costly materials like ermine and fur, or silk, velvet, and brocade.

(iv) Thus things of garments a man could purchase and use for apparel were directed by salary as well as by social status.
