Phloem is located on the outer side of the vascular bundle. Xylem transports only minerals and waters from the roots. Phloem transports food materials that are prepared by the green parts of the plants to other parts of the plant. Xylem is the dead tissues at maturity, but no cell contents

xylem
it conducts water and inorganic solutes in vascular plants.
it constitutes tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma, xylem fibres.
conduction mostly occurs unidirectional.

phloem
it conducts organic solute (food) in vascular plants.
it constitutes sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres
conduction may be biderictional(two direction)
