Most of the world population lives in the developing countries or poorer nations. China and India support over 21 per cent and about 16 per cent of the total world population respectively. Taking together the developing countries has over three-fourth of the total world population.

India’s growing population, as revealed by census of 2011, 121 crore, (an increase of more than 18 crore in the last decade) vitally concerns anyone interested in the solution of its various social problems. This huge population is not only unsus­tainable but also has an adverse impact on the environment. In addition to its size, the composition and distribution of the Indian population have an important influence on many of the policy issues.
