\textbf{Essay on}

\underline{\underline{\huge{\textbf{Pollution \::}}}}

Pollution is a very serious problem in our country. All impotant cities such as Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Madras have been found to be the most polluted cities in India. Two major areas of pollution are ai and water. Those living in the cities get neither pure air to breathe nor pure water to drink. In order to rectify this solution, it is important to identify the sources of pollution.

The major source of air pollution in the cities is the heavy traffic on the roads. Often these vehicles are not properly maintained so that dense black smoke is emitted.

Another source of pollution is the smoke from the factories, especially in industrial areas.

One impotant reason that the environment remains polluted is the absence of plants and trees. For trees breathe in carbon-dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere so that the atmosphere is automatically purified.

Water is another essential necessity, which, again we get in a highly polluted form.

Effluents from industries are also released into the rivers and these further pollute the water. Yet again the pipes through which the water is supplied to us are often old and rusted.

The effect of all this pollution of air and water is hazardous to all those living in the cities. The body doesn't get it's required supply of oxygen and thus we frequently hear complaints of people feeling listless and weak and unable to work effectively. So too is the city filled with pale anaemic looking adults and children.

The effect of water pollution is just as harmful. Inspite of heavy chlorination, the remains above the acceptable norms. Thus we often have epidermis of cholera, typhoid and other such water born diseases. Further the dust which we can easily be seen if the water is collected in a vessel and left standing for sometime, is believed to cause stones in the bladder and kidney problems.

There are a number of remedies to diminish the pollution.

There should be continuous check on the industries spewing smoke. The chimneys letting out the fumes should be at a height where the release of these are incapable of harming people. Trees and plants should be planted wherever possible.

Similarly steps should be taken to check water pollution.

A regular cleaning operation of the rivers should be undertaken.

Further, the municipal authorities incharge of the water supply should clean up their tanks regularly and filter and treat the water properly so that it doesn't have dust..

Last, but not the least impotant is the education of the masses in this regard. If people are made to realize the harmful effects of air and water pollution, then they could take the necessary steps to see that they themselves don't contribute to the pollution of their city.

Thus, the urgent need of the hour is to free the city of this problem and this can only be done if individual and government agencies work together to erradicate it.
