PM Narendra Modi in his recent address urged the nation to take caution during the celebration, reiterating that only the lockdown is gone, but the virus is still around.

Risks multiply as festival season dawns

Dussehra is celebrated throughout the country with pomp and splendour. Taking all the necessary precautions against novel coronavirus while we engage in festivities is crucial to avoid health complications as the season changes.

Festival season, winter conditions, increased pollution and reopening of work and entertainment spaces can serve as a deadly combination that can make more and more people vulnerable to severe COVID-19. Experts have already warned a possible second wave of coronavirus if we don't stick to standard protocols while we are at celebrations.

State governments have released norms to be followed during the upcoming festivities. Celebrations have gone virtual in some pandals, while in others, gatherings are strictly prohibited to smaller numbers.

Experts call for safe celebrations

The Weather Channel got in touch with Dr Jaiben George, a Junior Resident in the Orthopaedic Department at AIIMS, Delhi, who has also been dealing with COVID-19 directly in the past few months, to understand more about the necessary precautions.

“Using masks is a big defence in itself. People should wear masks all the time, and not remove them at all. If we keep removing masks in between, then the whole purpose of wearing them is defeated. People should avoid crowds and follow all norms. Eating outside should also be avoided because we end up removing masks,” said Dr George.

He added that even if anyone is slightly unwell, the person should not go out, especially to festivals. He stressed that knowing precautions is not enough and we have to keep reminding ourselves and
