Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing

Prevention is the act of stopping something from happening or avoiding it altogether. So, the proverbial saying prevention is better than cure means that it is sensible to stop a bad thing or an illness from happening in the first place than to have to deal with awful problems, worse health issues or damages later. It comes from as early as the 17th century and there is a Latin translation from even earlier (13th century) saying that it is better to meet a problem in time than to seek a remedy later.

This slogan is used by the UK Department of Health and Social Care as their vision to help British citizens live well for longer. It is the government’s plan to put prevention of illness at the heart of the nation’s health.

There is a good example of this phrase in action in 2020. Most countries took precautions to prevent their people from falling ill with the coronavirus. By preventing them from going to work, socialising, shaking hands, touching, it is a way of keeping them as safe as possible. By staying socially distanced and washing hands regularly they hoped it would save the majority of the population from illness and wouldn’t overwhelm the medical services. So, by trying to prevent everyone from catching the virus it is better than having to cure it at a later date
